Neyün mechanical ventilator: DTS and Nirax enterprise proude of working together

The positive results of the Neyün mechanical ventilation team continue to be a topic of conversation. At the end of the development process, this ventilation equipment has made the news across a number of channels on communication and been a topic of interest on international forums. Nirax and DTS are both proud of the collaborative efforts that brought this project to fruition.

Neyün was created when there was an alarming lack of clinical equipment in Chile during the imminent proliferation of the covid-19 pandemic. The device is the result of a DTS initiative with the cooperation of different entities such as Un Respiro Para Chile, Empresa Nacional de Aeronáutica (ENAER), Fábrica y Maestranzas del Ejército de Chile (FAMAE) and the important participation of Nirax in the area of software development.

This was the first time that DTS engaged in the development of a device with this characteristics, and it was a complex process of trial and error in which Nirax helped and guided us. We thank them for their important academic contributions, wich have helped DTS to carry out further complex projects based on this experience.

The Neyün Project Manager and Head of the DTS Redesign Area, Rodrigo Ibáñez, expressed his feelings regarding the work with Nirax: “Despite being an intense work, Nirax contributed much of the knowledge that he had about Labview (software), and results were beyond expectations thanks to the collaborative development environment and the commitment of both companies”.

The first mechanical ventilator of national origin has achieved excellent results. From a career of 30 companies, DTS was one of the first of 5 that managed to meet the demands of creating a Chilean ventilator. In addition, from the original production (of 20 devices), 15 were donated to the Barros Luco Hospital, 2 to the Hospital of the Chilean Air Force, and 3 to the Military Hospital of Santiago; 10 were delivered to Peru and 2 (Neyün Split) were donated by CMPC through its subsidiary Sofyts.

The positive results are even more impressive if we add the fact that it was a job done in record time, and that the ventilators were used in the period with the highest peak nationwide of covid-19 cases. Neyün has been used by more than 40 patients, met all the requirements of Certemed (a medical institution that depends on the University of Valparaíso) and has been approved by medical area specialists including those from the Catholic University of Chile, The Air Force Medical Hospital, University of Chile Hospital and others.

These results would not have been possible without Nirax’s collaboration in the development of embedded control software, DTS is proud to learn from other technology companies and we look forward to working together on another occasion.
